Abstract

Recent recognition of the intertwinement of family and business aspects in family firms has led to the perspective that family business performance should be assessed from both family and business angles. The focus of this conceptual paper is the elaboration of a performance measurement model aligned with this perspective. The proposed framework captures all quoted performance measurements within the two proposed constructs, namely leading and lagging constructs. Each construct is further dichotomised into the family and family business dimensions, mirroring the complexity of family business performance. It is anticipated that this conceptual exploration will surface debate on the uniqueness of family business performance appraisal.
