A reflection on social regulation

Abstract

To what extent is 'the economy' socially regulated and what do we mean by 'social regulation'? While a Hobbesian view sees the state as central, the Smithian tradition focuses on the market. But social regulation is not merely a matter of processes but also of ends. The original discussions of Greek philosophy remain relevant today and economic debates that ignore them are the poorer and the more misleading for this.
