Management innovation and technological culture. A philosophical inquiry

Abstract

This article travels across the waters separating management and philosophy with special attention to management innovation (or management reform). More specifically, the article examines attempts to place management innovation in the context of culture transformation - from scientific to technological culture - by adopting philosophical categories. After circumscribing the field of management innovation, a definition of culture is provided in terms of ethos (the embodiment of ideas in social practice) and logos (the rationale behind practice). Then the article considers management innovation in the context of culture transformation, through a complex re-articulation of the ethos-logos relationship. The endgame of the analysis pursued throughout this article is that in a technological culture, management innovation is ineffective in providing rationale to practice.
