Logistical outsourcing in a virtual digital world: the dilemma for logistics service providers

Abstract

This paper contextualises the impact of the transformations, arising from an increasingly virtual digital world, on logistics service providers (LSPs). The influence of changes driving logistical services to ever-increasing immediacy is also examined. As this paper addresses a still recent topic in the literature, with a restricted and limited research focus (logistical immediacy), this paper adopts a systematic literature review as the research method. A proposition concerning the dilemma faced by LSPs is constructed by highlighting aspects related to opportunities and implications, questioning the current model of logistical services adopted by companies. In addition to this contribution, the study presents several insights capable of leading to new ideas and new research avenues.
