Implementation predictors of strategic information systems plans: a comparison of Australian and Norwegian firms

Abstract

The need for improved implementation of information technology (IT) strategy has been emphasised in both empirical and prescriptive research studies. In this study, ten content characteristics of formal information technology strategies are identified from the research literature as potential implementation predictors. Surveys were conducted in both Norway and Australia. In Norway, the two statistically significant predictors in the testing of hypotheses were the description of responsibility for the implementation and the description of user involvement during the implementation. In Australia, the only statistically significant predictor was the description of projects' relevance to the business plan. Generally, strategic issues seemed to be important implementation predictors in Australia, while resource issues seemed to be important implementation predictors in Norway. However, the statistical results are somewhat inconclusive because of the limited sample sizes, response rates and explanatory power.
