Inventory optimisation for ramp-type demand along with deterioration and shortages in the supply chain

Abstract

An optimisation model for inventory management in the supply chain of items with ramp-type demand exponential deterioration rates with both backlogs and shortages is formulated. It is aimed at creating a pragmatic strategy by selecting the most advantageous purchasing time point, that to minimise the average overall cost. The solution procedure is presented and validated through a numerical example. Sensitivity analysis is carried out to identify the best possible outcomes. The model is suitable for supply chain recovery for high-demand items, particularly in the COVID-19 pandemic situation to deal with shortages, but it may also deal with items having short life spans like fruits and vegetables, ice creams, and other dairy products apart from fashion items with seasonal demand pattern. This paper is a pioneering attempt to optimise inventory planning in the supply chain, with a precautionary motive, which will set the business apart in extraordinarily complex situations.
