Abstract

Focusing on the impact of Hurricane Katrina, 2005 this paper argues for a gender-sociologically, and ecologically sensitive approach to the complex range of issues raised by environmental concerns. The correlation between gender and other themes of education for sustainable development such as class, race and geography is conceptualised within a whole systems approach to learning. Far-reaching pedagogical imperatives emerge from a holistic approach to sustainability and examples of interdisciplinary curricula change are outlined. In the final analysis, the discussion applies the same holistic approach to the concept of gender and argues for the integration of a politics of masculinity into gender debates.
