Optimal power flow with renewable energy resources using static VAR compensator and grey wolf optimisation

Abstract

The technical and economic performance of electrical power system networks is being improved by using renewable energy sources like solar, wind to the conventional power systems. In this paper, a composite bus utilisation index is used for the placing of static VAR compensator (SVC) and sized using grey wolf (GWO) algorithm for reduction of active power loss, fuel cost with valve-point effect and carbon emissions in a power system with renewable energy sources. Composite bus utilisation index (CBUI) is a blend of Vi/Vo index and L-index and determines the weak bus of the modern electrical system. The power to be delivered by wind and solar generation is determined by the Weibull probability density function (PDF) and lognormal PDF and interconnected to the power system network. The SVC is placed at the maximum value of CBUI, and the tuning of SVC at the proposed location is done with grey wolf algorithm. This methodology is applied to IEEE 57 bus systems to find the efficiency of the approach under various loading conditions.
