Dynamics of operational risks associated with the adoption of JIT system in the automotive industry

Abstract

To gain a competitive advantage in the global market, the automotive industry is striving to reduce lead time, inventory costs, bottlenecks, waste, and overproduction costs. To do so, industries are trying to move towards a just-in-time (JIT) manufacturing system. The core focus of JIT is to minimise waste and maximise efficiency. Along with the advantages of the JIT system, it also brings different kinds of risks associated with the adoption of the JIT system. Hence, there is a need for a framework that can prioritise and show the interrelationship between risks. An integrated approach based on the fuzzy-Delphi method (FDM), best-worst method (BWM), and interpretive structural modelling (ISM) is proposed in the current work to analyse and prioritise critical risks and identify the interrelationships between them. This novel three-stage solution will help industry experts, researchers, and practitioners prioritise and identify the interrelationship between the risks associated with the JIT system.
