The Johari Window: a comparative study of public sector and private sector executives in India

Abstract

This paper presents the results of a study undertaken to explore and understand the interpersonal communication patterns of managers working in the Indian public sector and private sector companies based on the Johari Window Model. Using the personnel relations survey (PRS), data were collected from 730 public sector managers and 470 private sector managers belonging to the middle level in the managerial hierarchy of some of the major Indian companies. Results indicated age to be negatively related to the Johari dimensions of exposure and feedback for the public sector managers, whereas age was negatively related to only feedback for the private sector managers. However, age did not predict the level of exposure and feedback among the managers. This paper also comes out with percentile norms corresponding to the raw scores on the PRS for Indian managers employed in the two sectors.
