Power distance orientation as a moderator of psychological ownership-constructive voice to supervisor relationships in IT services organisations of India

Abstract

Employee constructive voice may enable IT services organisations to grow and develop competitive advantage through innovations. To promote employee constructive voice to supervisor, we examined if psychological ownership for job or organisation can predict constructive voice to supervisor. As culture of an individual affects workplace behaviour, we also investigated if Indian culture in the form of power distance orientation affects voice to supervisor. Using a cross-sectional research design, we surveyed 349 lower and middle-level employees of IT services organisations in India through a questionnaire. Findings showed that psychological ownership predicts constructive voice to supervisor, and this relationship is moderated by power distance orientation such that low power distance employees express more constructive voice to their supervisors than high power distance employees. This will help organisations understand how to encourage employee constructive voice conveyed to the supervisor, and understand the key role of culture in employee constructive voice expressed to supervisor.
