Farmer producer organisation: an emerging business model for empowering small and marginal farmers in India - a case study

Abstract

Small and marginal farmers of India with fragmented land holdings face challenges in realising remunerative prices with limited collective bargaining power. This study considering an outperforming farmer collective during economic slowdown explored its business model, impactful services and factors of empowerment with primary and secondary sources of data. The commodity focus with professional management and governance as well as backward and forward linkages for output business of FPO under this study evidenced robustness in financial performance. The study with descriptive statistics and t-test validated FPO model is an ideal agri-business strategic approach for rural employment, enhancing farm income, purchasing power, etc., including standard of living of small and marginal agri-farmers of rural areas.
