A review of career women in the new economy: research directions in the Indian context

Abstract

The ever-evolving dynamics of interplay of gender in organisations has been an intriguing force to practitioners, academicians and researchers. Literature is replete with a plethora of research encapsulating the role of gender in organisational and work-life balance, with a special focus on female workers. In this article, I assess the extant literature on women's careers appearing in selected career and management journals from 2000 to the present to determine developments in the state of women's careers after more than a decade of the dawn of the 21st century. I have attempted to summarise and synthesise this growing body of literature and outline an agenda for future research, specifically for Indian researchers, in this direction. The purpose of this review is to examine the current state of the literature on women and careers at the outset of the new century and identify gaps in research in terms of Indian women in career.
