Divalent zinc removal from aqueous solutions by adsorption on magnetite nanoparticles: kinetics and isotherm

Abstract

Magnetite nanoparticles were applied to remove Zn(II) from aqueous solutions in batch systems. Rate experiments were performed at various initial Zn(II) concentrations (1 and 4 mmol/L), adsorbent concentration (2.5, 5 and 10 g/L) and particle size (10 and 20 nm). The experimental data were analysed using several kinetic equations to determine the best-fit equation and related parameters were calculated. The adsorption process followed the Elovich equation and the Fractional power equation. The adsorption process was found to strongly be pH dependent. The adsorption data fitted with Freundlich and Langmuir isotherm equations and the isothermal constants were evaluated.
