Abstract

On the basis of recent theoretical developments of complex Foreign Direct Investment (FDI), this paper is aimed at shedding light on the new aspects of FDI determinants in MENA countries. An empirical application with a spatial panel data model shows that both bilateral and third-country FDI variables are significant for explaining FDI inflows in MENA countries. In addition, export platform FDI is found to be widely used as an FDI strategy. These results have major economic and policy implications, especially with regard to the education policy and the economic integration process in the MENA region.
