Abstract

This paper attempts to estimate the discriminating impact of practical gender needs (PGNs) associated with microfinance participation on women empowerment. Exploratory research based on primary data has been conducted by applying multi-stage sampling on 552 respondents. The responses were collected through direct personal interviews. The dichotomous discriminate model has been used for grouping the beneficiary into empowered and not-empowered. The discriminating effect of microfinance can easily be identified from 'moving for health requirement', 'utilise savings', 'moving to natal place' and 'hygienic expenses'. The current research estimates social impact at the macro level. This paper investigates the gap in the literature on the discriminating effect of PGN variables associated with microfinance on empowerment. However, the uniqueness of current research lies in the fact that the researcher has estimated the impact at the micro level on PGNs by using discriminant analysis.
