An insight into recent trends in mobile money services: a comprehensive bibliometric analysis

Abstract

Mobile money services have brought a revolution with an innovative idea in the financial services sector. Therefore, this study aims to provide an insight into the recent trends in research and publications on mobile money services. The study retrieved published documents on mobile money services from Scopus database for the period of 2009-2021. A comprehensive bibliometric analysis was carried out using several methods. The analysis found a steady increase in the number of publications on mobile money services during the past 13 years. From a geographical point of view, several countries around the world are contributing significantly to research and publications on mobile money services. However, the USA and the UK were found to show their excellence in publications with the highest number of citations, most productive authors and prominent institutions, and collaboration. The study findings might be useful for academia and practitioners to bring the burning issues related to mobile money services into the light.
