Incentives for cooperation by innovating firms in Peru

Abstract

This study examines the factors influencing cooperation among innovating firms in Peru, with a focus on incoming spillovers and appropriability. Using data from the 2018 Innovation Survey of Manufacturing and Knowledge-Intensive Firms of Peru, we analyse the determinants of firms' decisions to engage in cooperative innovation. The results reveal that incoming spillovers significantly increase the likelihood and intensity of cooperation, while appropriability has limited impact. The findings suggest that firms collaborate primarily to access external knowledge, while protecting innovation investments is not a major concern. This research highlights the role of policy incentives in fostering innovation networks in developing economies, emphasising the need for targeted support to enhance collaboration. The study contributes to the understanding of innovation ecosystems in emerging markets and potentially may inspire policy recommendations to strengthen industrial competitiveness.
