Pathways for entrepreneurial ecosystem development: a comparative analysis of advanced economies and Latin American and Caribbean experiences

Abstract

Entrepreneurship ecosystems have garnered significant attention from researchers, governmental institutions, and business organisations for fostering knowledge-based economies through the creation of new ventures. Through a semi-systematic literature review of 32 articles (17 for advanced economies and 15 for Latin America and the Caribbean) published between 2016 and 2024 in Google Scholar, Scielo, Redalyc, and Dialnet databases, this study develops a comparative analysis of entrepreneurship ecosystem characteristics across these contexts. The research contributes to entrepreneurship ecosystem literature by providing: 1) a comparative framework highlighting structural and network differences between advanced and emerging economies; 2) policy implications for ecosystem development in emerging markets; 3) insights into how institutional variations shape entrepreneurial outcomes. Results reveal that advanced economy ecosystems demonstrate strength from accumulated experience, while emerging economy ecosystems remain in a learning phase, requiring context-specific development approaches.
