Factors that influence entrepreneurial motivation in micro-enterprises in Costa Rica

Entrepreneurship is considered an essential source of economic and social development. However, depending on each country's socio-economic, institutional, and ICT access conditions, the predominant type of enterprise may be conditioned. This analysis focuses on understanding the motivations and entrepreneurial initiatives of micro-enterprises in Costa Rica, based on the National Survey of Micro-enterprises 2023 conducted by the INEC. This study analyses how socio-economic factors, institutions, and access to ICTs differ between the two types of entrepreneurships, namely opportunity-driven and necessity-driven, and which factors are more significant in necessity-driven entrepreneurship. The data has been analysed using binary logistic regression. The results highlight that socio-economic and technological factors affect the reasons for entrepreneurship, highlighting specific patterns that deserve attention in public policies and development strategies, and that the type of economic activity has a differentiated influence on entrepreneurial motivation, with a lower association with necessity in the industrial and commercial sectors.
