Abstract

Vehicle Manufacturers (VMs) now require suppliers to provide fully-designed and developed sub-systems, rather than manufacture to VMs' specifications, and this is driving suppliers to focus on product design and development as a basis for competition [1]. Urban and Hauser [2] and Kleinschmidt and Cooper [3] observe that new product failure rates have shown little improvement since studies were first done. The literature presented here suggests that models proposed to date are too general to be useful to practitioners of New Product Development (NPD). This paper presents the findings of a research project undertaken to identify the characteristics of a successful new product development process for UK automotive component suppliers. The aim is to provide findings that practitioners within this sector are better able to implement.
