There is an extense body of research proposing that export intensity may be conditioned by internal barriers. The characteristics of the International Marketing Managers (IMM) and their effect in the first step of internationalization, the proactive role in the international advance, or the achievement of a better international performance, are among the most analyzed factors. Our study rewiews empirical research on the effect of the IMM characteristics on their firms´ export performance. The analized studies were published between 1960 and 2004.
