Abstract

This paper analyzes the impact of broadening coverage of priority sectors on credit flow to agriculture at the bank branch level of the Kalahandi district, Orissa. The study reveals that the share of priority sector from total bank advance have increased in both the regions (advance and backward region), whereas the share of credit flow to agriculture has declined during the same period. It indicates that the bankers are giving preference to non-agricultural activities. This situation is very prominent in the advance region. A comparison between two regions on interest income on advance and the credit going to agriculture shows that both are inversely related. The analysis also highlights that the flow of agricultural credit is largely governed by the security (direct or indirect) that the stock of capital offers to the financial institutions advancing credit rather than by the factors influencing the demand for credit. Inter-regional disparities in the flow of credit to priority sector; in general and agriculture, in particular; as a proportion of total deposit in the bank is a common phenomenon in the institutional credit markets.
