Abstract

The world utilizes power generation by fossil fuel involving the emission of carbon dioxide. This has an impact on the greenhouse effect and climate change. The concern has led to creation of a new market: the Carbon market. This market issues a type of credit called Certified Emission Reduction to projects reducing the amount of greenhouse gases. Hydropower projects are among the most likely to receive this type of incentive because they are considered a source of clean energy with minimal impact on the environment by the Clean Development Mechanism. This article presents a review of the existing methodologies for assessing greenhouse gas emissions and the implementation of the ACM2 methodology in small hydroelectric plants in Colombia. We calculate an emission factor updated for the country.
