Abstract

When one wants to assess the situation of basic income support, one first looks at the number of people receiving benefits under Book II of the Social Code. However this alone does not provide the complete picture. The duration of dependency offers important additional information with which to gauge the situation properly. It shows that women draw benefits for a longer period of time than men, which is also a result of their lower availability on the labour market. However, once they actually do manage to get out of dependency, the situation is more likely to be sustainable. (IAB)
