Abstract

"Families where the parent is on her or his own are becoming more and more frequent; they are usually a female phenomenon and present the social security system with new challenges. Lone parents are more threatened by poverty while at the same time have to rely on basic income support more often and for a longer period of time than other parents. Their situation on the labour market is tricky in view of the lack of childcare institutions. However it is not completely without hope: one reason is that lone parents are surprisingly acquisitive."
