On the Utilitarian Roots of Saint-Simonism : from Bentham to Saint-Simon

Abstract

The links between Saint-Simonism and utilitarianism in economics are still fairly unclear, while a Benthamite relationship is sometimes clearly claimed by Saint-Simonian writers. This paper examines the first moment of this relationship, which is the link maintained by the doctrine of Saint-Simon (1760-1825) with certain writings by Bentham (1748-1832). As well as explicit references and terms common to both, it pinpoints four dimensions of this connection, especially the likening between the general principle of utility and industry. It concludes that there is a real relationship, but one that is not stabilised, and that will give rise to subsequent transformations.
