Abstract

The paper explores the feedback Italian liberals2 established between economic integration and development during that particular epoch in European history which opens with the debate on national customs unions and closes with the short-lived triumph of international trade liberalization (coincidental with Italy’s political reunification). Special attention is dedicated to the role they gave to technical progress and international and intersectoral factor mobility in relation to a dynamic view of comparative advantage.
