The Agent, the Actor and the Spectator. Adam Smith's Metaphor in Recent Literature

Abstract

The paper examines a number of recent works on Adam Smith’s linguistic strategies, and on their relevance to his thought. A special attention is devoted to scholarly discussion about the impartial spectator and the invisible hand, stressing the different points of view from which the subject has been dealt with. The article, besides giving a short survey of the different perspectives in the literature, shows that the recent attention to the figures of speech in Smith’s text led scholars to emphasize the classical content in some trends of his thought, which have been interpreted as Stoic or Sceptic according to the different approaches.
