Abstract

The paper examines Danish economic policy from 1900 to 1999. It is argued that although considerable changes in current policy did occur, the fundamental objectives remained stable. The primary objective of the political majority was to maintain a free market economy. The extensive regulation introduced during the two World Wars was in each case seen at the time as only a matter of temporary expediency, and deregulation was carried out after each of the wars. Macroeconomic policy was seen as an instrument to establish a firm basis for the market economy, and the debate on distribution policy has always underlined its impact on the allocation of resources.
