Abstract

Türkiye is a country with a young population structure. Therefore, the employment and investment policies implemented in Türkiye are of great importance in terms of youth employment. In this context, the aim of this study is to test whether the youth unemployment hysteria hypothesis is valid in Türkiye. This study, which tests the period between 1991 and 2024, uses the youth female unemployment rate, youth male unemployment rate, and total youth unemployment rate as its data set. To detect the hysteresis effect, the traditional Phillips & Perron (1988) unit root test, the one break Perron (1989) unit root test, the one break Lee & Strazicich (2013) unit root test, and the two break Lee & Strazicich (2003) unit root test were used. The research results generally indicate that the hysteresis effect is valid for youth female unemployment and total youth unemployment in Türkiye. Similarly, the hysteresis effect is also valid for youth male unemployment, but some models of the unit root tests show that the hysteresis effect is not valid for youth male unemployment.
