The Impact of Artificial Intelligence on the Digital Communication Channels of the Future

Abstract

This study examines the impact of artificial intelligence on digital communication channels of the future, employing a mixed-methods design that integrates systematic literature review following PRISMA guidelines, bibliometric analysis using VOSviewer, and semi-structured interviews with 21 experts in AI and digital communication. The findings reveal three dominant research fronts: Theory of Mind-based semantic communication, generative AI-driven communication, and deep joint source-channel coding. Meta-analysis of 28 studies shows AI-generated content increases user engagement by 12% (pooled ratio = 1.12; 95% CI 1.04–1.20). However, qualitative analysis identifies critical tensions: 81% of experts cite transparency deficits, 76% note accountability ambiguities, and 71% highlight inadequate professional codes. The study concludes that while AI significantly enhances communication efficacy, sustainable implementation requires robust governance frameworks addressing psychological resistance, trust erosion, and cognitive autonomy. Theoretical contributions include reconceptualizing communication as meaning co creation between heterogeneous agents, while practical implications emphasize transparency as a core design principle and the transition toward “governance as code” architectures.
