A importância da qualidade institucional no desenvolvimento das regiões brasileiras

Abstract

A literatura sobre o desenvolvimento econômico ressalta que o investimento em capital físico, capital humano e a melhora da produtividade são essenciais nesse processo. Ressalta-se, também, a importância de instituições na acumulação de fatores de produção e na produtividade. A partir desse cenário, o presente estudo realiza uma análise da qualidade institucional no desenvolvimento das regiões brasileiras, utilizando instrumentos do primeiro censo (1872) para controlar para os problemas de causalidade reversa, erros de mensuração e omissão de variável relevante. Os resultados empíricos sugerem que as instituições são cruciais no desenvolvimento regional e que o principal canal é via produtividade.
