Agrarian Production and the Archiving of Folksong

Abstract

Songs that accompany women’s tasks in agriculture often provide significant insights into agrarian conditions and the conditions of labour. What might songs as forms of cultural production tell us about relations of production? To investigate the extent to which songs may be used as source material to unearth the consciousness of labouring women, this essay subjects to close scrutiny two song genres from the Bhojpuri speaking region of India. It asks about the extent to which these songs provide a space for women to interrogate the existing patriarchal order and to bargain with it. This paper also explores the role of these songs in producing and reproducing the accepted gender norms.
