1994 yılında, John von Neumann ve Oskar Margentern "The Theory of Game and Economic Behavior" (Oyun Teorisi ve Ekonomik Davranış) adlı eserleri ile stratejik karar verme durumlarının matematiksel analizini içeren oyun teorisini iktisat bilimine kazandırdılar. 50 yıl sonra 11 Ekim 1994'de oyun teorisiyle ilgilenen üç bilim adamı, John F. Nash, John C. Harsanyi ve Reinhard Selten, kooperatİf olmayan oyun teorisindeki dengenin temel analizleri ile ekonomi bilimi dalında Nobel ödülüne layık görüldüler
