Structural and Optical Properties of PS/PMMA Polymer Blend Films Designed for Enhanced Light–Matter Interaction

Abstract

Polystyrene (PS) and poly (methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) polymer blend films with different compositions were prepared using the solution-casting technique to investigate their structural and optical properties. Blend films with PS ratios of 100:0, 70:30, 50:50, 30:70, and 0:100 was synthesized and characterized using X-ray diffraction (XRD), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), and UV–Visible spectroscopy. XRD analysis revealed the predominantly amorphous nature of all films, while FTIR spectra confirmed the successful physical blending of PS and PMMA without the formation of new chemical bonds. UV–Visible studies demonstrated high optical transparency in the visible region and composition-dependent absorption behaviour in the ultraviolet region. The optical band gap values were determined using Tauc's method and were found to vary with blend composition due to intermolecular interactions and modifications in the electronic structure. Among the investigated compositions, the PS (30:70) blend exhibited the highest direct optical band gap, indicating enhanced optical transparency and improved light–matter interaction. The obtained results suggest that PS blend films are promising materials for transparent optical coatings, optoelectronic devices, light-management layers, and flexible electronic applications.
