Effect of Stefan Number on the Similarity Solution of One-Dimensional Two-Phase Moving Boundary Problems

Abstract

In heat transfer problems of phase change there exists continuously moving interface or moving boundary during the process. The transport properties such as, interface position, its velocity, temperature distribution etc continuously change and tracing them at any point of time is the important parts of the solution. Moving boundary problems arise in phase-change processes, such as melting and solidification, metallurgy, geo thermal units, thermal energy storage systems. In this paper a one-dimensional Stefan problem of phase change during freezing process is considered. Stefan number is an improper parameter in phase-change problems and is varied in the prescribed range, to analyse the effect of this number on the Neuman-similarity solution. The numerical results validate the expected physical behaviour of one-dimensional freezing processes and demonstrate the strong influence of the Stefan number on process parameters.
