Extraction and Purification of Curcumin from Turmeric Varieties – A Comparative Study

Abstract

Curcumin being a bioactive compound present in turmeric (Curcuma longa) has multiple health benefits. Many turmeric varieties are cultivated across India for centuries. Followed to the cultivation of turmeric, yield of curcumin with respect to turmeric variety is important. In this study, curcumin was extracted and purified from turmeric varieties ‘Rajapuri’ and ‘Vasmat’ using solvents of different chemical nature like ester, alcohol and ketone. ethyl acetate, ethyl alcohol and acetone. The study results depicts that curcumin content depends on turmeric variety. It was found that curcumin content from variety ‘Rajapuri’ is significantly higher than that from variety ‘Vasmat’ irrespective of type and chemical nature of solvent used for extraction and purification purpose.
