Exploring the Influence of Social Media on Youth

Abstract

Social media is an internet-based form of communication. Social media platforms allow users to have conversations, share information and create web content. Social media sites like Facebook, Instagram, WhatsApp and YouTube have an impact on learning and the communication, but excess use can cause sadness, anxiety, low self-esteem and academic disruption. In this study, we studied the impact of social media on the youth. We conducted a study on 200 college students using the Bergen Social Media Addiction Scale (BSMAS). The gathered data was also studied using Machine learning techniques. Machine learning approaches can accurately predict social media addiction. Although technology facilitates learning, enjoyment, and conversation, excessive use results in behaviors similar to addiction.
