Abstract
This project focuses on the formulation, evaluation, and comparison of two commonly used skincare products cold cream and vanishing cream. These creams are widely used in daily life for maintaining healthy skin, providing hydration, and improving overall skin appearance. Although both serve similar purposes, they differ in their composition, texture, and suitability for different skin types. This study aims to understand these differences by preparing and analyzing both formulations under controlled laboratory conditions. Cold cream is a water-in-oil (W/O) emulsion that contains a higher amount of oil, which helps in forming a protective layer on the skin. This layer prevents moisture loss and keeps the skin soft and hydrated for a longer time. On the other hand, vanishing cream is an oil-in-water (O/W) emulsion that contains more water and less oil, making it light, non-greasy, and quick to absorb into the skin. Because of these differences, cold cream is generally preferred for dry and sensitive skin, while vanishing cream is more suitable for oily and normal skin types. In this project, cold cream was prepared using the fusion method with ingredients such as beeswax, liquid paraffin, borax, and purified water. Vanishing cream was formulated using the saponification method with stearic acid, potassium hydroxide, glycerin, and purified water. Both methods are standard pharmaceutical techniques used to prepare stable emulsions. Proper care was taken during preparation to ensure uniform mixing, stability, and quality of the formulations. After preparation, both creams were evaluated using different parameters to check their quality and performance. These included organoleptic properties such as color, odor, and appearance; physicochemical properties like pH, viscosity, and homogeneity; and performance tests such as spreadability. Stability studies were also carried out to observe any changes in the creams under different temperature conditions over a period of time. The results showed that both formulations had good physical appearance, pleasant odor, smooth texture, and no phase separation, indicating proper emulsification. The pH of all formulations was found to be within the range of 6–7, which is suitable for skin application and does not cause irritation. Cold cream showed higher viscosity, meaning it was thicker and more occlusiv e, which helps in better moisturization. In contrast, vanishing cream showed lower viscosity, better spreadability, and faster absorption, giving a smooth and non-greasy feel. In conclusion, both creams have their own advantages and applications depending on skin type and environmental conditions. Cold cream is more beneficial for dry and sensitive skin due to its deep moisturizing effect, while vanishing cream is ideal for oily and normal skin because of its light texture and quick absorption. This study highlights the importance of formulation type in determining the effectiveness and user acceptability of skincare products.
