Comparative Investigation of Structural and Magnetic Characteristics of Ni²⁺ and Co²⁺ Substituted ZnFe₂O₄ Nanoferrites

Abstract

The present study investigates the concentration-dependent magnetic behaviour of Ni²⁺ and Co²⁺ substituted ZnFe₂O₄ nano-ferrites synthesized via a controlled co-precipitation method. Spinel ferrite nanostructures with varying dopant concentrations were prepared to examine the influence of transition metal substitution on structural, optical, morphological, compositional, and magnetic properties. X-ray diffraction (XRD) confirmed the formation of a single-phase cubic spinel structure with slight lattice variations, indicating successful incorporation of Ni²⁺ and Co²⁺ ions into the ZnFe₂O₄ lattice. FTIR spectra exhibited characteristic metal–oxygen vibrations corresponding to tetrahedral and octahedral sites, while UV–Visible spectroscopy revealed tunable optical band gap behavior attributed to cation redistribution and electronic interactions. SEM analysis showed nanoscale agglomerated morphology, and EDS verified the presence of Zn, Fe, O, Ni, and Co elements. Magnetic measurements using VSM demonstrated enhanced saturation magnetization and variations in coercivity and remanence with increasing dopant concentration, governed by superexchange interactions and cation redistribution between A and B sites. The results highlight the potential of Ni²⁺ and Co²⁺ substituted ZnFe₂O₄ nanoferrites for magnetic storage, spintronic, and biomedical applications.
