Abstract
Chronic kidney disease (CKD) has emerged as a critical worldwide health issue which brings substantial health burdens and death risks. Anemia stands out as the predominant medical complication of CKD which leads to detrimental effects on patient safety and their overall well-being. This review examines all possible risk factors which lead to anemia in CKD patients while it explains the current scientific knowledge about the disease's underlying mechanisms and methods for diagnosing and treating it. Anemia in CKD primarily results from erythropoietin deficiency, impaired iron metabolism, chronic inflammation, and reduced red blood cell lifespan. The prevalence of anemia and its severity increase with the progression of CKD while various demographic factors and clinical factors and nutritional factors and socioeconomic factors affect its development. The burden of diabetes and hypertension and iron deficiency together with limited access to medical care create additional healthcare challenges. Anemia in CKD leads to cardiovascular complications and cognitive decline and increased mortality. The process of early diagnosis requires hemoglobin assessment together with iron studies while clinicians need to implement appropriate therapeutic interventions which include both iron supplements and erythropoiesis-stimulating agents and new treatments which feature HIF inhibitors. The implementation of modifiable risk factor solutions combined with educational initiatives about risk factors will lead to better patient results especially in Indian resource-constrained environments.
