Abstract
Verticillium lecanii is a well-established entomopathogenic fungus with significant potential as a biological control agent for the management of insect pests. First described in 1861, this fungus infects host insects through direct contact with the cuticle, a protective outer layer composed of lipids, proteins, and chitin. Upon adhesion, fungal conidia germinate and penetrate the insect integument through the coordinated action of extracellular hydrolytic enzymes, particularly proteases and chitinases. Chitinase plays a pivotal role in degrading chitin, a major structural component of the insect exoskeleton, thereby facilitating fungal invasion, systemic colonization, and eventual host mortality. The enzymatic degradation of cuticular barriers enables V. lecanii to effectively control soft-bodied pests such as aphids and whiteflies. Due to its targeted mode of action and biological specificity, V. lecanii represents an eco-friendly alternative to conventional chemical pesticides. Its use minimizes environmental contamination, reduces the risk of pest resistance development, and limits adverse effects on non-target organisms. By integrating natural pathogenic mechanisms with sustainable crop protection strategies, V. lecanii contributes to environmentally responsible pest management. This study highlights the infection mechanisms of V. lecanii, emphasizing the role of chitinase-mediated cuticle degradation and its relevance in integrated pest management (IPM) programs aimed at promoting sustainable agriculture.
