Abstract
Introduction: Osteoporosis is a major global health concern that disproportionately affects women, particularly those in the postmenopausal age group. Characterized by low bone mass and structural deterioration of bone tissue, it increases susceptibility to fractures, most commonly of the hip, spine, and wrist. This mixed-method study aimed to assess the attitudes and coping strategies among women diagnosed with or at risk for osteoporosis in selected rural areas of dist. Mandi, Himachal Pradesh. Methodology: This mixed-method study assessed the attitude and coping strategies of women 30 years and above regarding osteoporosis in selected rural areas of distt Mandi by using purposive sampling technique. Data was collected using sociodemographic variables, attitude scale and by conducting semi structured interviews. Validity was ensured by expert opinions and reliability was tested using Karl Pearson’s correlation coefficient. Ethical approval was obtained from ethical committee of GNC, SLBSGMCH Mandi (HP) and village Pradhan of rural areas. Both descriptive and inferential statistics were used for data analysis. Results: Quantitative data was analysed by using chi square test and results showed no significant association of attitude and socio-demographic factors. Most of the women (71.7%) showed neutral attitude followed by 26.7% showing positive attitude. Mean value was 77.73 and median value 76. Qualitative analysis revealed different themes such as treatment practices, dietary and lifestyle adjustments etc developed after interview analysis of participants verbatim. Conclusion: The present study concluded that women with osteoporosis have diverse experiences and coping strategies related to osteoporosis. Findings revealed that a portion of participants held positive attitude while most of them exhibit neutral attitude. Participants with a positive attitude exhibit a higher proportion of adaptive coping strategies whereas maladaptive behaviours were observed in those with limited knowledge or support.
