Abstract
The Jharia Coal Field, located in the eastern part of India, is one of the oldest and largest coal-producing regions, supplying a significant portion of the nation’s energy needs. However, the environmental impact of extensive mining activities in this region has raised serious concerns. This study aims to explore the various environmental repercussions of coal mining in Jharia, including air pollution, water contamination, land degradation, and loss of biodiversity. The research also delves into the social and health impacts on local communities, including respiratory diseases, waterborne illnesses, and socio-economic displacement. The historical context of mining practices, combined with current methods, illustrates the challenges of balancing economic development with environmental sustainability. The study examines the existing governmental policies and their effectiveness in mitigating the adverse effects of mining. Various technological and community-based mitigation strategies, such as land reclamation, eco-friendly mining practices, and pollution control technologies, are explored. Furthermore, successful rehabilitation efforts in similar mining regions globally are presented as potential models for Jharia. The study concludes with recommendations for the sustainable management of mining activities, emphasizing the need for stricter regulations, innovative technologies, and active community involvement to mitigate the environmental impact and promote long-term ecological and social well-being. Providing an in-depth understanding of the situation in Jharia, this study contributes to the broader conversation on sustainable mining practices in coal-rich regions, highlighting the importance of adopting green mining strategies to preserve the environment while fulfilling energy demands.
