El turismo médico: tendencia de transformación para Ciudad Juárez, México

Abstract

Los problemas de la atención médica contemporánea han generado una creciente demanda de servicios por pacientes extranjeros. En el marco de la teoría fundamentada, mediante 69 entrevistas en profundidad realizadas de 2013 a 2015, esta investigación exploratoria tuvo por objetivo entender la realidad del turismo médico en una ciudad fronteriza. Se presenta una visión general del turismo médico que existe en Ciudad Juárez, Chihuahua, México, frontera con El Paso, Texas, en Estados Unidos. Como resultado se destaca la oferta de servicios para un mercado segmentado y servicios de atención médica enfocados a satisfacer las diversas necesidades del paciente-consumidor. Existen dos hospitales para la atención de pacientes internacionales, pero el grueso de la demanda se atiende en nosocomios ordinarios de la localidad. Se concluye que Ciudad Juárez es un destino de turismo médico incipiente y se identifica una tendencia de transformación hacia este tipo de servicios.
