Turismo Y Desarrollo: La Construcción Del Lujo Y El Ocio En El Mundo Contemporáneo

Abstract

Para mediados del siglo XX, los diversos avances técnico-científicos en Europa y Estados Unidos, asociados con una reducción en el tiempo de trabajo, mayor comodidad y tiempo para el ocio como así también un aumento progresivo de los salarios, se han constituido en factores de peso para consolidar al turismo (o industria de los viajes) como una actividad masiva y comercial a nivel mundial. Por tanto dentro de la comunidad académica existe consenso en afirmar que el viaje y el desplazamiento son parte inherente al turismo como fenómeno orientado a lo lúdico y placentero (Santana-Talavera, 2006); la cantidad de turistas y viajeros en todo el mundo no sólo se ha incrementado en los últimas décadas sino que también continúa en asenso (Khatchikian, 2000) (Getino, 2002) (Schluter, 2003) (Wallingre, 2007) (Korstanje, 2007) (Urry, 2007). Al respecto, J. Urry afirma “anualmente se consignan más de 600 millones de arribos de pasajeros internacionales (compárese con los 25 millones de 1950); a toda hora 300.000 personas sobrevuelan los Estados Unidos (cantidad equivalente a la población de una importante ciudad); medio millón de nuevas habitaciones de hotel son construidas cada año en el mundo entero” (Urry, 2007: 17).
