Avances Tecnolã“Gicos Aplicados A La Biotecnologã A Vegetal En La Repãšblica Dominicana

Abstract

La flora en la República Dominicana ha sido etiquetada por muchos investigadores como una de la más variada en todas las Antillas. Existen 5.000 especies diferentes, de las cuales 2.000 son endémicas; 2.400 son nativos de nuestra isla y cerca de 600 llegaron a nosotros de otros continentes. En la sierra central de la República Dominicana crecen extensos bosques de pinos. En las regiones costeras más húmedas se encuentra una zona de manglares paralela a la costa y las especies endémicas constituyen el 40% de la flora de la isla. En este grupo de pinos se encuentran (Pinus occidentalis), palma real (Roystonea hispaniolana), de palma o de coco Catey macaco (Bactris plumeriana) y el guano (Coccothrinax montana). Entre la fauna se destacan 49 especies de aves, 28 de ellas son residentes, 2 migratorias y 19 endémicas como el cuervo (Corvus leucognaphalus), el cual existía en Puerto Rico, pero hoy sólo sobrevive en la Hispaniola. Algunas de las especies características de las aves en las montañas son el Canario (Carduelis dominicensis), Zorzal de la Selle (Turdus swalesi), Chirrí de los Bahorucos (Calyptophilus frugivorus), Chicuí (Todus angustirostris), Cigüita Aliblanca (Xenoligea montana), Cotorrita de Sierra (Temnotrogon roseigaster), Maroíta Canosa (Elaenia fallax). Existe una gran diversidad de reptiles (especialmente del género Anolis) lo mismo que de anfibios (siendo los más notables los del género Eleutherodactylus).
