Evaluación de edificaciones de bambú en el noroeste de Ecuador: Condiciones después de terremoto y percepciones de los usuarios

Abstract

En 2016, un terremoto de magnitud 7.8 (en la escala de Richter) afectó gravemente la región noroeste de la costa del Ecuador. Esta tragedia ha dejado al descubierto la mala calidad de construcción en esta zona del país y evidenció que las edificaciones con mayor resistencia al terremoto fueron aquellas ubicadas las zonas rurales, hechas de bambú, madera y otros materiales locales. Sin embargo, las construcciones de bambú que no están relacionadas con el turismo generalmente están asociadas con la pobreza, pese a que varios estudios lo ubican como un material sostenible. Esta situación se debe a la falta de soluciones ofrecidas por los profesionales en el campo del diseño y la construcción en esta región, quienes han mostrado poco interés por estudiar este tipo de edificaciones y desarrollar nuevas estrategias para adaptarlas a las necesidades y expectativas de los usuarios, sobre todo lo usuarios de bajos recursos. El objetivo de este estudio es identificar los beneficios y desventajas de las viviendas de bambú para discutir el potencial del bambú como material de construcción sostenible para las regiones costeras ecuatorianas.
