Abstract

En el presente artículo, se analiza la evolución equilibrada de la separación gobierno-religión de la Inglaterra vitoriana, frente a la versión laizante y anticlerical de la Europa continental, ejemplificada en la Kulturkampf de Bismarck. Así, mientras en Gran Bretaña el catolicismo social del Conde de Shaftesbury eliminó los excesos del liberalismo, y frenó el avance del socialismo; en el continente el ejemplo del Conde Melon y de los obispos Blomfield o Keteller, terminaron cediendo ante el empuje del socialismo.
